Keynote Presenter:

Coach Ken Carter

“Average is not good enough. Period!”

Coach Carter sent a powerful message when he locked his undefeated, state play-off team out of the gym and forced them to hit the books. His message was simply to push them to improve their grades. Ridiculed by his community and peers, Coach Carter drove it home to his players to stop counting on athletic potential as the only ticket out of a tough, inner city life. This eventually led to Paramount making a movie about Coach Carter’s drive to better the lives of his players in 2005. It is entitled, “Coach Carter” and stars award winning actor Samuel L. Jackson.

Coach Ken Carter is a graduate of Richmond High School and a father of one son, Damien Carter. He attended George Fox University in Oregon, and received awards: Harvard Club’s Distinguished Secondary Educator Award; NAACP’s Impact Citizen of the Year Award; California State Lottery/Governor Gray Davis’ Heroes in Education Award; San Francisco Mayor, Willie Brown’s Leadership Award; California’s Unsung Heroes Award; the A.N.G. California Boy’s Coach of the Year Award; and has been presented with a Proclamation from the City of Richmond. He was recently honored as a recipient of City Flight Newsmagazine’s the “Ten Most Influential African Americans in the Bay Area” for 2000 in the Sports category.
